You should go to "Jasmine Restaurant" and "SnowMan" at Freak Street. It is also called Johche old Hippy place. Also try foods and shopping at Thamel. Likewise Kingsway...Bakery is popular (One in New Road near Crystal Hotel). If you want to try spicy local food go to Chikamugal near Kathmandu, Ganesh mandir on the way to Lagan tole a restaurant called "chatamari Chey" at the right side small cosy place to be J .....so on Patan, backside of Kirshna Mandir. An old well-known family run typical restaurant where you can find variety of Newari food which is yes HOT HOT HOT. For shopping I don't know what you want to buy? So what I can suggest is, if you intend to buy Nepal made garments you can try boutiques around Thamel or go to Patan, Bhaktapur......hang around, you surely will find something to buy.

of all the bakery cafes, the one in durbar marg has the best momos..mmm also fire and ice pizza in thamel in the sanchaya kosh building the new restaurant on the top floor of Kathmandu mall was awesome too--had some world class chowmein there--not to mention you can see the whole city of KTM from there. for drinks, check out pub maya for cocktails, and new orleans for the music..there's so many more in Thamel though. for ethnic momos, provided you are not worried about diaherria ( hope i pronounced it right), there is a momo place right behind chabel ganesthan, they have the best momo-- better than the old kalikasthan momos! And dont forget the chicken chilli at Nanglo Man, I am dying already just thinkin about them.
