Chure-Bhawar protesters burn down two Red Cross vehicles
Activists of Chure-Bhawar Pradesh Ekta Samaj this morning torched two buses of the Nepal Red Cross Society in Dhanusha district for 'defying' the indefinite bandh (shutdown strike) in the Chure-Bhawar region.
Dozens of protesters attacked the buses carrying Red Cross officials at Bhimuwan Chowk and set them on fire. 13 Red Cross officials who were inside the buses were injured in the attack.
The injured persons have been undergoing treatment at Janakpur Zonal Hospital. 50 Red Cross officials were on their way to Nepalgunj from Biratnagar to participate in a convention of the Red Cross.
Meanwhile, there was mixed response to the bandh called by the Samaj in Chure-Bhawar region today.
Very few marketplaces and factories remain open in Siraha, Sarlahi, Sunsari, Bara, Udaypur, Rautahat, Dhanusha and Mahottari districts while transport services on the East-west Highway has been affected.
The Samaj announced indefinite bandh from Monday saying the government failed to address its demands including an ‘autonomous Chure-Bhawar region’, release of its activists arrested last month and investigation into the loss of lives in recent agitations in Terai. nepalnews.com mk Apr 24 07
