Here is an immortal melody from the poetry painted on silver screen -- Pakeezah
Seeing Raaj Kumar and Meena Kumari sail off into the picturesque sunset makes me long to sail off into my dreams with my beloved as well ....if only we could also say:
Pakeezah has exquisite dialogues ...poetic dialogues in fact .... there are a couple of them that I especially love and just felt like posting them here:
1. meena kumari, unable to hide that she's a tawaif, when raaj kumar tells her that she's his destiny: "bas keejiye ....itne pyar se meri jaan mat lijiye ...." 2. grand father warning raaj kumar not to repeat his uncle's mistake of marrying a tawaif: jo log dhood se jal jate hai woh chhaaz bhi phook phook ke peete hai raaj kumar retorts: afsos ke log doodh se bhi jal jate hai 3. raaj kumar, flabergasted at finding his mystery lady from the train, stares in astonishment while meena kumari speaks to herself, lying in the tent, pretending to be asleep: aap hairan hairan mujhe yunhi dekhte rehenge main tarasti tarasti aapko bina dekhe aap hi ke saamne aap hi ke bistar par khatam ho jaungee zara moo pher leejiye, kuchh to moholat deejiye main ek saas leloon, aap ki ek jhalak dekh loon ......
heySimpleGal,. thank God, you noticed ... I myseld was wondering --sometimes aloud--what ac oincidence! Hey, may be it is like old Hindi movie plot...poonarjanma...what says you? yes, we should talk.
kamaal chha yaar, john Galt, ke ho yo? you, I and Simple Gal have the same musical vibe? "Yeh raat, ye chandani... wow... i just love it.. Hemanta kumar's gem...Man, thanks again..
Juggy, My little girl is almost two and half now, growing up by leaps and bounds, goes to daycare and is a bully there. Life is coming faster than I expected, her growth and my eccentricity are running parallel.
khabardaar, Pleasure is always mine, I never thought I could find that song anywhere so soon. Wish i could post the video.
Nepedai, Darshan, yes, the postings here strongly decry misogyny and perversion embedded in recent musics. And boy!! am I delighted how many of us listen to classics here. Thanks for posting that yesudas song, my other favorite is:
का करूँ सजनी, आये न बालम, couldn't find the video.
Wateva posted a Hemant kumar gem that I hadn't heard before ...Tum pukar lo. But I recognize the movie "Khamoshi" the same one with the popular favorite "Woh sham kuch ajeeb thi" ....saw the movie several years ago .....
Tum pukar lo's been playing in my head all day. Can't get it off!
Gradpa: जो लोग दुध से जल जाते है वो छाज भी फूंक फूंक के पिते है. Raj Kumar: अफसोस के लोग दुध से भी जल जाते है.
Ha Ha ! Hilarious, even though it was not meant to be.
Two of Pakeeza's songs "चलते चलते युँ ही कोई मिल गया था" and "मौसम है आशिकाना" have some personal moments connected, so they touch my soul. Even without, they might do just the same.

And for Yesudas lovers, a song from my father's favorite movie, Sunayana.
Just listened to Chal udja re panchi again and it had me in tears again ....what a sublime musical treat! One more reason to ask why such soul stirring songs no longer exist ....
does anybody have ajee ruth karr ab kahan jaaiyega from the movie arzoo....that one is one of my favorites....i have been trying to get hold of the song but without luck!
Two school of thoughts on love. a romantically spirited and chirpy couple- shashi kapoor and hema malini at one end and the angry young man -amitabh b. on the other. what would you expect? :P ..i have personally fluctuated, to and fro, between the two sides of love at different stages of my life so far, but i guess this song ends on a good positive and true note.
hey john Galt, this song "jalte hain jiske liye" reminds me of a childhood tutor from shillong, assam, who was a mean s.o.b. but at the same time kind enough to teach and practice this song... talat mehmood...reminds me of my childhood...thanks again..
my math teacher sang this song in guru purnima. he had a breathtaking voice for a teacher...we were quite captivated and amazed. i did not quite understand the meaning of this song then...but as i am getting older, its making more sense....hahaha.......:P
one of the most beautiful songs i have ever listened to..
this song reminds me of my school days....have sung this song few times in antakshyaris during picnic...:D
the song says it all.....my personal philosophy of life :-)
Since Loote brought up a Khayyam number -- Mohabbat bade kam ki cheez hai ....reminded me of my all time fave Khayyam song.
Aye dil-e-nadan arzoo kya hai joost joo kya hai .....from Razia Sultan I think....This song transports you instantly to a far away and forlorn land, where the boundaries of the "real" fade into the realm of an exquisite fantasy ......Sorry the video doesn't have the actual picturization of the song ....But enjoy it, nonetheless!
