Don't know your age but seems like you are a big fan of Salma Aga. She had some kind of weird charm and her voice very different yet vey captivating. I wonder why all Gazal Singers have that kind of voice specially Paki ones.
SimpleGal-- I thought of myself well versed on oldies, but the one you posted "Chain se kabhi humko aapne" is totally totally new to me.. hadn't heard it--ever! was it a hit?
Film industry mourns OP Nayyar’s death Press Trust of India Mumbai, January 28, 2007. Bollywood on Sunday mourned the death of music director OP Nayyar describing him as a composer with a distinctive style whose work was always original.
Singers and film personalities from across the spectrum paid rich tributes to Nayyar. Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who never worked with him during her career as a playback singer, said that his “music always carried its own distinct mark“.
“His work was different from his contemporaries. One could always identify an OP song. He left his distinct mark on his songs,†Mangeshkar said.
Talking about her personal relations with Nayyar, she said, “I never sang for him, but contrary to what people say, we did not have any quarrel.â€
Nayyar died aged 81 of a heart attack at Thane.
As news of his death spread, a pall of gloom descended on the film industry, where Nayyar was regarded as one of the greatest composers of all times even though he had not been in the limelight for close to three decades.
Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt described Nayyar — who was always seen in public in white attire and a hat — as “an audacious man who was a king in his time“. “Asha Bhosle owes whatever she is to him. The distinct sensuality that was injected into Asha’s singing was the contribution of this extraordinary man,†Bhatt said.
Extensive use of the typical Punjabi rhythm was the main characteristic of Nayyar’s music, Mangeshkar said.
Actress and Censor Board chief Sharmila Tagore, who starred in Kashmir Ki Kali, said, “We will remember him and his contributions will be there forever. His name will be there as long as there is the history of music.†Singer Manna Dey said he was saddened by Nayyar’s death as no one could replace him. Actor Rajesh Khanna said “originality was the symbol†of Nayyar, whom he described as a “charismatic personality“.
TV star and actress Tabassum said, “OP Nayyar’s death is yet another shock for us. We were still to recover from the sorrow at the demise of (noted writer) Kamleshwarji when we heard of the death of kind-hearted Nayyar sahab.â€
Actor Shammi Kapoor, who had been the hero in many of Nayyar’s songs said, “He was one of the finest music directors. A man who have India it style and rhythm.†“He was very innovative about voice control. He gave style to Rafi sahab and Ashaji.â€
Singer Sonu Nigam said it was a sad moment for the music industry because “we have lost a person of stature and calibre.†“I had some nice moments with him in Sa Re Ga Ma. Besides being a music director he was an idealist,†he added.
Thank you all for taking your time to search youtube and the links. I have to admit that I have been enjoying all the links (your well wasted/used times, if i may say so :) ) without doing even a single job on my own. Yes, I am guilty. I have been away from hindi music, songs and everything else for a long time. Thanks to all of you, this thread has has made me nostalgic.
I, too, have watched numerous movies and enjoyed Mohammud Rafi, KK, RD, and all others, not quite all in the Jaljala and Himalaya of Biratnagar, but a city close by. Beginning from the so-called third class, which by the way was aptly named "gandhi class" (no disrepect to Gandhi here) to those date movies in the corner of upper class "balcony" when I could afford to pay (over priced "blackie" sold tickets on a student discounted "saturdays") for it. That was one place where the love birds could enjoy movies as well as each others company without anyone giving you "the look". Those were the days (I guess).
As for "Arth", it was one of the most controversial and higly debated movie back then. Smita Patil and Sabana Azami, no doubt were/are one of the most talented actresses bollywood has ever produced (is produced a right word here?). Too bad that we didn't get to watch much of Smita Patil's talent. I wonder is Sabana Azami still around?
Khabrdar -- No, I didn't know that the legendary OP Nayyar had passed away. That's very sad indeed.
"Chain se humko kabhi" is one of Asha's finest songs and I believe she even won accolades for it. Here are 2 other of my fave Asha "melancholy strains"!
I heard that Asha Bhosle broke down in tears while singing the above song -- Ab ke baras bhej bhaiyya ko babul" from "Bandini" -- the one movie where the formidable Nutan's perfomance has solidified her status as one of the most powerful actresses of her time.
Another one from the same movie, a catchy tune but profound lyrics:
TM - I'm a huge fan of Wordsworth, Keats, Byron and Shelley. :-)
Cleopatra - "Koi ye kaise bataye ke woh tanha kyu hai" is definitely a winner. I just used "Arth" as the keyword. :-)
Nutan ko kura garda malai euta man parne geet yaad ayo ... and incidentally, I found it on youtube as well ...one of the most sublime and "rational" views on the elusive term LOVE.
My fave lines: Chand milta nahi sab ko sansar mein Hai diya hi bahut roshni ke liye!
I sing these lines often when life chooses not to bestow favors on me! :-)
SimpleGal--oh my God, what is it? clairvoyance or coincidence? I WAS looking for it just now allover the youtube...I wqs using all sorts of key words...what did you use? Gosh, this is eerie....!!
This probably does not fit here. However, I feel like sharing it here with some of most perceptive and compassionate posters of Sajha.
Here is a very short clip from the documentary "Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids" (2004) I have just uploaded to Youtube.
The clip shows one of the happiest moments of the kids when they were taken out to a pleasure trip to a beach.
See their spirits freed and their childhood playfulness, innocence and curiosity coming to them again.
But the reason I wanted to share this clip was a very very special moment I will call an encounter with beauty.
Take a look at a sublimely beautiful shot towards the end (starting from 1:22 min) when that girl in pink frock (her name is Puja and she is the most free-spirited kids in the movie!) with another kid trot past the camera and when she is passing she looks up for a careless relax and suddenly exclaims, "Hey Chaand, Moon !".
Next shot shows a beautiful crescent moon. Although I wish the cameraperson could have panned the camera up uninterrupted from the previous shot to show the moon in a single shot, the beauty of the moment is intact in two shots.
And the following shot which shows the girl in an oblivion and careless mood flittering her wet hair while walking with other friends as if leaves the beauty of the brief encounter uncorrupted.
For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity.~William Penn So we've lost O P Nayyar too -- With saddened heart and shattered emotions, here are some clips ;solely Mr Nayyar's ingenuity:
My father bought the VHS of the movie--Madhumati-- and made me watch it with him when I was a kid. Then bang! I became an instant fan of Dilip Kumar and Vaijayanti Mala. I loved the movie and the music was excellent. Although I love all the songs of the album, here's my favorite. It goes like this: (Damn! I am singing it hehe :P)
टूटे हुए ख्वाबोने हमको ये सिखाया है दिल ने, दिल ने जिसे चाहा था आँखोने गवाया है
Here's my second favorite from the same movie. If you love nature, you will love this song!!!..can't believe even after 50 years this song sounds so refreshing. isn't it what we call --TIMELESS ? :P
Another favorite from Madhumati. They used to propose through songs in old days, didn't they? hehe....I wish there still were actresses like Vaijayanti or madhubala ... I have to admit, I fell in love with her while watching this..such a class and panache in their acting and beauty!!.... :P
