So the almost-historic-but-not-quite discussion session between the Maoists' women rights representatives and this year's Miss Nepal contestants took place on July 29 at the premises of  International club, Sanepa. And the protestors put forth a 19 point sum up of why Beauty pageants must be banned. This is what they had to say...

Miss Nepal must be stopped because.....

1.The pageant's ultimate goal is to use women as tools or objects in advertisements for various products. 

2.Beauty is nature-given. And therefore what is natural can never be judged or put to compete. 

3.This contest stands against Nepali culture and tradition. 

4.For a country whose majority of citizens live under the poverty line, this competition is way too expensive for all Nepalese. 

5.The one-year contract that the winners sign after winning the crown is a violation of their basic human rights to be free. 

6.The pageant is not a platform for opportunities, the girls are being fooled. 

7.This pageant does not basically help the winners to help the society it rather gives them a platform to cheat work, a shortcut to name, fame and money. 

8.This pageant bogs down the young minds in a world of fantasies eventually triggering their tendencies to use drugs and go for other kinds of criminal activities or even commit suicide. 

9.This pageant gives a message that "to be a woman, one has to be beautiful and only the beautiful are real women". 

10.And that message indirectly adds fuel to domestic violence, rape and murders of women.  

11.Even if it looks as if international agencies are aiding the contest, the truth really is that the pageant is run by government tax. 

12.And so the national capital goes to the hands of foreign country. 

13.The pageant shifts away the focus from the common wish of those suffering from lingual, gender, caste, creed and nativity issues that would be talked about in the Constituent Assembly. 

14.The pageant  hurts the sentiments and pride of women living across the country. 

15.Civilization is about wearing clothes and when the contestants walk on the ramp half-naked, it dishonors women virtue. 

16.The government should be responsible to provide jobs to women, not this sort of beauty pageants. 

17.We've been raising our voices against this pageant since almost two decades now, and despite of it, the organizers have shown little concern and have been running the pageant without our consent. 

18.Use of inappropriate sub-titles such as best smile, best figure etc  for the contestants is wrong. 

19.And finally, this pageant must be banned because it opens a platform only to young, raw minded youth.

Since the contestants weren't given much of an opportunity to defend their stand or explain much on why the protestors' could be wrong, we have yet to see how the contestants will be hitting back. Explaining why the maoists' representatives were allowed to speak more than the contestants', organizers the Hidden Treasure said, "It's always a good thing to have patience and listen more than talk. And since the protesting party has opened their mouth more, does that not make it easier for us to pin point where they have gone wrong, making our stand stronger?"

They have assured of second rounds of talks. We shall keep you informed if it'll ever happen. And yet again, since the Maoists have already got what they wanted, an upper hand in this anti-beauty pageant mania that is, we really doubt if they'll ever agree to appear in front of these contestants again.

We shall wait and watch!

I dont know why tintotopi is being very humble while being cynical/satirical.(his/her last paragraphs prove this). But please remember i am not calling anyone bad/calling the pageant unworthy.

How about a source from maoists write/say the same thing.? or a press release from them stating such....Whatever you wrote has no authenticity, no sources where it came from, no recorded conversations/pictures makes me feel like the conversation never happened. I am not ready to believe a few things stated.

Sorry for being analytical but I am sure the Maoists want Nepal to have a better representation in the international arena as well. I am not saying i support maoists or anything. But seems to me like some pageant is round the corner, and this thread is to avoid bad publicity.

No miss Nepal the lady with the crown has travelled across Nepal volunteering at rural schools/teaching women/kids about health, HIV, prostitution and all that that exist among Nepali people. Almost all pageants like this across the globe give tution aids/scholarships for people that participate, why do the organizers themselves not encourage education among participants?

In case you didnt know its who makes Dabur Honey and Chyawanprash and shampoo and all that using Nepali herbs and now has factories all over Nepal. Its primary industries are India based and owned. So, my question is can you actually call it Nepali and a sole- Nepali event?

I am just writing this long thread because we just blame whoever without reading the whole thing, esto le usto garyo falano le yo garyo dhiskano esto. Its better to think twice before you drop the "f' word on someone,and with attitude like yours, I don't know- you could never have a crown on your head.

 

I don't have patience to read all the points of Maoist to stop Miss Nepal Beauty Contest but have an experience how much intelligence do these Miss Nepals have. While back in home I was fond of listening Hits FM and I don't know whether they have the same program right now or not but they had one program where Miss Nepal used to host the program about wildlife conservation as an ambassador of WWF. One day I was listening to the same program and Sugarika Kc started to host the program. She was talking about the rhino conservation. And she was saying that in Nepal we have rhino conservation in two areas; one is at Bardiya National Park and another is at Shivapuri National Park and she was repeatedly giving this information. I couldn't stop myself calling to Hits FM but they were so engaged that I couldn't contact them. Then I sent them email about this issue and they replied that they will be careful about this kind of mistake in future. But I am so suprised about the intelligence of so called beauty with the brain Miss Nepal. I am not saying that we need to stop this kind of contest but it has been already more than ten years when we started this competition but still what type of brains our Miss Nepals have? Can we think to win any international competition with this level of brain or give any contribution to Nepalese society?

How many Nepalis outside of KTM, BRT, Pokhara, etc know about MissNepal that they would be interested in being educated by her??? Better to have locally developed resources to work on this.

Nepali contestants, Nepali pariprekchhya, Nepali contest. If CG (makers of WaiWai) sponsored Indian Idol, as they too have factories and market in India, would it matter at all? This question/stand does not address the issue in question here.

You guys are MISSING THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE HERE...........WOMENS RIGHT........Today its No modelling or any Beauty Pagentry .......Tomorrow women wont be allowed many stuff such as .......No jeans, mini skirts or even makeup and hairstyles. Then Back to Women Making babies, and wearing sari or Kurta......and SWAMI DAAS......serve Husband.

I know many will dissagree with me..............But dont Mixup education with modeling.........IF YOU WANT TO STOP MODELLING AND MORDENIZATION...........Stop all foriegn influences in Nepal...THATS WHERE ALL THESE IDEAS GENERATE...................close down the border, shut off all cables networks, NO INTERNET,......no tourism alowed, ISOLATE NEPAL...NO NEPALESE ALLOWED TO VISIT OTHER MODERN COUNTRIESO..................comon you guys in this day and age of ever changing mordern world.......NEPAL IS LAGGING BEHIND WAY TO BACK.....and due to international influence and all this attractive mordernization......YOUNG NEPALESE are trying to catch up desprately whith what ever means they can to FIT IN THIS WORLD...cell phones, internet, cable TV, Hiphop music, Fashion of the world........and young kids and youth of Nepal have every right to Express them selves......YES we have to focus in many things more Important than Modelling and stuff...............like education, health care, Jobs,etc.....and people are aware of that BUT our country's leaders are not focusing on those issues.....instead wasting their time fighting over power and controll and creating DISTRACTIONS LIKE THIS to divert attention from the main cause. When did beauty Pagentry ever come between politics???SO why now politics wants to come between pagentry?????
